If you’ve been in an accident in Colorado, you have the legal right to choose your own auto body shop for repairs—even if your insurance company recommends a preferred provider. Understanding your rights and the repair process can help you get higher-quality repairs, avoid delays, and protect the long-term value of your vehicle.
Accidents can be overwhelming. Knowing what to do next makes the process much smoother.
Taking control early—especially when choosing your repair shop—can save you time, money, and stress.
One of the biggest misconceptions after an accident is that you must use the insurance company’s preferred shop. That’s not true. In Colorado, you have the right to:
Insurance companies may suggest certain shops, but they cannot legally require you to use them.
Understanding the claims process helps you avoid confusion and delays.
Your chosen shop can communicate directly with your insurance company to ensure all necessary repairs are covered.
Understanding the difference between preferred (DRP) shops and independent shops helps you make the best decision for your vehicle.
❌ “You have to use the insurance company’s shop”
You are legally allowed to choose your own repair facility.
❌ “Insurance won’t pay if you go elsewhere”
Coverage applies regardless of which shop you choose.
❌ “It will delay the process”
Many independent shops work efficiently with insurance companies.
❌ “All repairs are the same”
Repair quality can vary significantly between shops.
Your vehicle is one of your most valuable assets. Choosing the right shop impacts:
A high-quality repair ensures your vehicle is restored to its pre-accident condition—not just made to look good on the surface.
Key factors to consider when searching for a trusted auto body shop in Pueblo:
Not all damage is visible right away. Once repairs begin, technicians may discover additional issues — this is called a supplement. Why supplements happen:
A reputable shop will document the damage, communicate with your insurer, and get approval before proceeding.
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Parts — Made by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Exact fit and quality.
Aftermarket Parts — Made by third-party companies. May vary in quality.
Insurance companies may recommend aftermarket parts to reduce costs, but you can discuss options with your repair shop.
Driving conditions in Pueblo make local expertise important. A local shop understands:
Choosing a local collision repair expert ensures better service and faster communication.

Sheri Southern2023-08-25These people are a wonderful family oriented business. Twice they have offered to put small parts onto my car quickly for free, but this last time I insisted on paying them something.... their guy came out in the summer heat and spent some time putting on a rubber gasket that Don's salvage found for my car. Also they did a good job fixing my car's bumper a couple years back when they knew I was paying out of pocket (they found a cheaper than OEM part for a good price). God bless you folks!
